Well I just completed Chapter 5 where Performance Management Tools are discussed and you guys really nailed it! Within our organization ; we follow strict para-military etiquette. Our shift Sergeants are in charge of several Troopers and in turn are responsible for the Troopers Performance Appraisals. I am going to HIGHLY recommend this book and this Chapter in particular to our new shift supervisors. I definitely believe that any supervisor who were to read this chapter would help himself greatly and in the same process he would help to better the employees he/she is responsible for.
I like the quotes about "you know you are in an immature organization when....." those really make me chuckle because they remind of other agencies I have worked with during my 20 year career. Your book also reminds me of a lot traits and qualities learned in the military...from all the leadership courses I attended during my military stint. I really think anyone who is in a leadership/supervisor role should read your book!
Especially in our organization where you move up through the ranks. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters on Information Sharing and Performance Appraisals! You guys nailed that subject! I have seen supervisors use the threat of "don't forget your Performance Appraisal is coming up..." Instead of taking the opportunity to mentor, to teach or better inform the worker on something they may not understand, they choose to use the Performance Appraisal as a threatening tool??? Go figure.
I have your book here at work and read a chapter or two every chance I get. It has been a great read thus far!
